Trend Alert: How To Wear Pastel Denim

Pastels are making a huge comeback for Spring 2013. It seems that the trend has been dormant for a few years (I think visions of frilly, pastel Easter dresses were enough to make fashionistas steer clear), but after fall fashion’s dark color palette, the lighter hues are a refreshing change. Pastels can be tricky, though, because lighter colors aren’t always the most flattering, and you don’t want to put too many of them together at once, or you’ll end up looking like an Easter egg. Pastels work best when you break them up with neutrals or darker colors. I also like to add a structured piece, like a blazer or a clutch, to any outfit with a pastel piece, because I think it elevates the look and makes it more sophisticated. The pastel trend comes in many forms, but one of the most prominent manifestations this season is pastel denim. I took this pair of mint green skinny jeans by Current/Elliott and styled it two different ways to show how to wear the pastel trend!

BALANCED NEUTRALS

For this look, I played with both neutral pieces and metallics, which make the mint green really stand out! You can never go wrong with a classic black and white combo with a pop of color, which is why I chose this black blazer by Topshop and white blouse by Zara. I also chose a dusted rose clutch by ASOS. The rose color contrasts the mint, and it is subdued enough to act as a neutral. Picking up on the metal corners of the clutch, the metallic smoking slippers add extra shine to the look. I finished off the outfit with chain pearl earrings by ASOS. The lime green chain running through the earrings adds a punch of neon – it’s fun, without being overwhelming.

TONE ON TONE

Another great way to balance out pastel denim is to play with the tone-on-tone trend. I chose this envelope clutch in the same color family as the mint jeans, but in a slightly lighter hue. If you’re going to wear two pieces of the same tone in one outfit, the number one rule is to break it up! The navy blouse by French Connection does exactly that, and the darker color provides a lovely contrast to the mint. I decided to experiment with print in this look as well, choosing these floral-printed pumps by ASOS. The hints of green and blue in the shoes pick up on the mint and navy in the outfit. The blouse and shoes make this look a little dressier than the first, and I added jeweled drop earrings to finish off the look.
