Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt premiered last March on Netflix, introducing us to our favorite 29-year-old former doomsday cult member, Kimmy.
Kimmy is the girl your mom always wanted you to be friends with in elementary school, but you knew talking to her was social suicide so you kept your distance. But then years out of high school, she became the coolest person ever. We all know a Kimmy.
I don’t want to give away too much about the show if you haven’t seen it yet, but basically: Kimmy is tricked into thinking the world is ending, so she gets locked in a bunker and is finally freed 15 years later. Of course, the first thing she does after re-joining society is appear on TODAY in New York City. Then, she decides she loves the big city so much that she ain’t leavin’.
The series follows sheltered, naive Kimmy as she tries to figure out how to use an iPhone and how to interact with people in general. Even though she literally has no idea what is going on 90% of the time, Kimmy is full of life and happier than everyone around her — including me and you.
Here’s why we should all aspire to be more like Kimmy Schmidt, the world’s best role model for 2016.
So Kimmy ate candy for dinner. Yet, at this point she is homeless, running around NYC. Not a single fudge to be given at this point. She’s just happy to be free and doing what she wants. Do what makes you happiest even if it is eating candy for dinner. Doing what you want makes life easier.
Lets be honest, whenever we see a kid on the street we think several things. Where are your parents, who let you out of the house alone, etc etc. But do we ever say anything? No. Kimmy did though. She said what was on her mind. More people should say whats on their minds… but like just keep it to happy good things? Sorta like, What Would Kimmy Schmidt Say?
When Kimmy was locked in the bunker she thought of this idea. Count to 10 and everything will be ok again. She tells this to her boss Jacqueline during one of her many meltdowns and it just seemed right. What a great idea. It’s easy and can be done quickly. Ready – count to 10 – go.
We’ve all been called a bitch and we’ve all tried to respond with something cool. Then someone called Kimmy a bitch and she took it one step further. Best comeback ever? Might be. She took this one outside the box, brought in some puppies and went with the facts. Kimmy went simple with the comeback, nothing too much. Easy win right?
You can come at Kimmy with anything you want and she spits it right back at you. It might not be the most up to date lingo, but she kills it. Again, she keeps it simple and to the facts. Xan, Jacqueline step-daughter, will probably be dead in 2090. Maybe sometime soon we’ll figure out life on Mars or something. Maybe Kimmy is a psychic and just knows Xan will live a boring life? Hmmm.
She’s literally playing with a door here and having fun. Kimmy ends up living in a closet and loves it. She doesn’t need her iPhone or alcohol or millions of followers on social media for fun. She finds it in the simplest ways and enjoys it. Give her a box and she’ll probably have more fun than a toddler.
So Kimmy doesn’t graduate high school because she gets abducted. She’s running around NYC with a middle school education. DO YOU THINK YOU COULD RUN AROUND NAVIGATING THE CITY OF NEW YORK WITH A MIDDLE SCHOOL EDUCATION? Probably not. Anyways- she believes in herself and trusts that she can do that. She also goes back to school because she’s smart. Kimmy shows she wants to be a better person.
For being stuck in the bunker for so long, Kimmy sure figured it out quickly. Jacqueline tries to convince Kimmy to get some surgery done to make herself look better. Our role model Kimmy figures it out though. She doesn’t conform to what Jacqueline and society want. She stands tall. YGG.
Now a days people are afraid to share who they are with the world. While Kimmy struggles with this throughout the series, you see her grow through the 13 episodes and begin to open and tell who she really is. It’s very inspiring to watch someone who is afraid of who she is go from hiding her life to being able to tell the ones she cares for, the truth.
YOU ROCK KIMMY, DON’T EVER CHANGE. Now I’m off to binge watch season one over and over as I wait for season 2 to premiere in April!
