Realistic health tips 20-somethings should totally know

No one thinks they’ll get to the age where they start to worry about sagging skin under their chins or popping joints, but all that creeps up way faster than you’d think.  Here are a few little tips that you should be following (but maybe don’t already know about) in order to be the best you – your overall health and future beach bod will thank you. And, I promise all of these tricks are way more effective than expensive night creams or intense diet regimens that die every weekend.

You can avoid hangovers (kind of)

You’re not imagining it, hangovers really do get worse with age; the worst age for hangovers is apparently 29! I used to be all about whiskey, but after a while, dark-colored liquors never sat well in my stomach. I had to switch to tequila, for my health, you understand. The obvious solution is just to stop drinking, but that’s easier said than done (and no fun). We’ve got a couple tips to avoid wine hangovers, but there are tons of other hangover remedies.

You know that advice that you gave your friends on their 21st birthdays? Drink lots of water, take some time between shots, don’t mix liquors? Yep, all that x10. Not everything is more fun with age.

Take care of your eyes asap

Some of us are blessed with perfect vision at birth, but your vision gets progressively worse as you age regardless. Coupled with the increased visual demands of screens, it’s no surprise that six in 10 people wear glasses or contacts. Even if you already have vision problems now, you don’t want them to get worse.

Lucky, eye health doesn’t demand a lot of investment to maintain. Roll your eyes in circles 10 times over, and practice the 20/20/20 rule. After every 20 minutes of work at a computer, stare at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Easy peasy. And, it’s a nice excuse to take a break from work!

Also, btw, wear your sunglasses! Not only do they protect your eyes from the sun, but they look great.

Yes, you really do need sunscreen

Okay, so we all know that we’re supposed to wear sunscreen, but it doesn’t always fit into our daily routines. I always forget it, say that I want to tan anyways, and think it won’t be that bad… Don’t be stupid like me. Sunscreen isn’t just for beach days, either; it’s for any day with moderate sun exposure, and it’s recommended that you apply it before leaving the house. (And then that you reapply every couple hours … Who’s really doing that?)

Luckily, you can incorporate sunscreen into your makeup regimen, which covers some of the most sun-sensitive areas of your skin – your lips and your lids. At least start there, and if you want a gold star, actually follow the sunscreen directions that doctors recommend.

Snoring (and other bad stuff) can be stopped

Apart from being just plain annoying, snoring can have some real health risks, including sleep apnea (yikes). So if you’re a habitual snorer, you have some real motivation to try to stop. There are lots of gadgets you can buy to help, but there are also some simple exercises you can do to prevent snoring once and for all.

The best part is that a lot of those snoring exercises will also strengthen your neck – so you can tackle double chins and sagging neck skin all at once.

Getting older isn’t always “fun,” or maybe it’s just that your definition of fun has changed. You might be afraid of losing the health of your early 20s, but these little tips are a lot easier to implement than daily gym trips and carb avoidance. Little habits can make all the difference later on. You might not be worried about these things right now, but give it another five to 10 years, when you’re a 30-something, and you’ll be surprised.
