10 (Affordable) Things To Do This Summer

Well, it’s summer time!  And although it no longer holds that magical sense of carefree freedom that it once did as a child, summer still is just the best.  People are happier, the days are longer, the weather is nicer, and a little bit of you still holds onto that “anything can happen” feeling that summer has always given you. So, even if you are at a 9-5 job, working some lame summer gig, on a tight budget, or unemployed, here are some things that you can definitely afford to do this summer and that I for sure plan to do as well!

Do at least one touristy thing you’ve never done in your city.
Often times, when you live somewhere, you get so busy with life, work, and hanging out with friends that you fail to enjoy the tourist attractions right in your backyard. There are still many things I haven’t done in my city as I am sure is the same for you. So go act like a ridiculous tourist and take a million pictures where you live, no one has to know that you aren’t just visiting!

Go visit your family.
Nothing can quite make you relax more than just spending time being taken care of at your parent’s house.  And if you happen to already live there, then go visit your siblings that you haven’t seen in a while or your grandma or that cousin that you get along with so well.  Being with family, although frustrating at times, can often be just what you need.

Go to the beach, lake, river…etc.
Whatever body of water type you live near, go to it. Whether you feel bikini ready or not, when you think about it, no one really cares. Everyone is too concerned about how other people think they look in a bikini to care about how you look. So grab that sunscreen, magazine, boogie board, raft, and some beers (only when legal, of course!) and go get your tan on.

Reconnect with an old friend.
Everyone has those friends that you will always love but that through various life circumstances you have grown apart from. Nothing bad ever happened, you just took different paths and struggled to stay in touch with each other. So go reach out to them. In today’s technologically advanced world, you have no excuse to not stay in touch with people. Make the effort to reconnect and I guarantee both of you will be thrilled to catch up.

Go to an amusement park or local fair.
While this may be one of the pricier items on my list, it is still very doable, especially, the fair one. Going to an amusement park and fair are two of my favorite summer activities. You get to act like a kid and go on all the roller coasters, take the silly pictures, and just be excited to be there. This is a great thing to do with a fun group of friends or a really cute date idea as well.

Delete all those people you don’t talk to or actually like from Facebook.
So the days of adding every person you’ve ever met or want to meet on Facebook are over. And if you regularly look at your newsfeed and wonder how you actually know that person, it’s time to purge. A good method for deleting people that I have learned from friends is to check out whose birthday it is and whether or not you want to wish them a happy one. It may sound cruel but if you can’t even be bothered to take 5 seconds to say happy birthday to a Facebook “friend,” then they really aren’t your friend, are they?

Go somewhere you have never been to before.
Originally, I was going to say to visit a new city, but if that doesn’t seem financially feasible, then just go anywhere new! How about that new restaurant down the street from your apartment, that museum your friend raved to you about, or that really pretty park on the other side of your city? While I fully support traveling to a new city for a weekend if you can, it is also very possible to try something new right around the corner.

Pamper yourself for a day.
I have never and will never meet someone who doesn’t love being pampered. Often times, I think people see that word as meaning you have to go to some exotic and expensive spa, which if someone wants to foot the bill for, I am always down. But, it never hurts to treat yourself to a little something, something. So de-stress for a bit by getting a mani/pedi with your best friend, enjoy a massage you found on Groupon, or grab a cute new haircut at that good yet reasonably priced place. You can afford it, I promise. Well, in moderation of course.

Organize a gathering of your friends.
Everyone loves an excuse to get together with good friends, so give them one! This could be as simple as inviting people over for a potluck one night or having a chick flick movie night. It can be whatever you want to be! You could even throw an actual party and have everyone pitch in for a keg because you are never to old to enjoy a little beer pong and flip cup. Just do it, everyone will thank you for it and you will have a great time.

Have a day where you stay in your pajamas all day.
Having a busy schedule filled with fun things to do all the time is great, and exhausting! So every once in a while, I love to have just a chill day where I never get dressed or put make up on and just sit in bed watching movies and Netflix all day long. It’s wonderful. And we all need it sometimes. So there is no shame in it. Even if it is a nice day out, if vegging out in your PJs is what you need, do it! And I promise not to judge, because god knows I do it whenever possible.

After spending a year working as the Marketing Assistant for a trivia company in San Diego, she decided it would be a great idea to quit her job and move to Austin, Texas with her best friend from college. While she will always be a California girl, she has enjoyed embracing the Texas lifestyle, y'all...well, minus the ridiculous heat, and the bugs. Aside from that, she has a wanderlust that won’t quit and is constantly planning her next adventure. In her free time, she enjoys pretending to be friends with her favorite celebrities, getting too emotionally involved in her TV shows, and knowing way too much pop culture.
