Must-Have Monday: Five Spring 2014 Trends You Should Know

In case you didn’t know, we’re sick of winter. Mother Nature toyed with us last week with weather that made us want to ditch our down coats and boots for lightweight jackets and flats, but she was just a tease. Yet even though Punxwatawney Phil predicted more winter, we’re already set for spring, and we know you are too. Here are five trends you should start thinking about, stat:

1. Pastels

A cliched but true spring trend, pastels instantly remind us of a new season where we can add a dash of sorbet-like shades into drab winter neutrals.

2. Bold Graphic Prints

Unlike the sweet florals of spring, a graphic print lends a fresh spin to other basics you already own. Peter Pilotto’s collection for Target hits the spot.

3. Carrie Bradshaw’s (er, Sarah Jessica Parker’s) shoe collection

It might be a little out of our price range, but if we can’t have the Manolos Carrie made famous on SATC, these will definitely fit the bill. Each pair makes its own statement and has a grosgrain-ribbon detail on the back. The line is available starting Feb. 28 at Nordstrom and Nordstrom.com.

4. Skinny Pleats

These are not the kind you’ll find on school uniforms–rather the skinny pleats bring a breezy vibe, possibly signaling warm weather ahead.

5. Athletic Detail

Big on the runways this past fall, sporty tops and sneakers (think stripes and mesh details) are in for spring. If this isn’t a better motivation for you to get to the gym, I don’t know what is.

Hannah Gettleman

Hannah Gettleman is a bubbly twenty-something living in Chicago. She graduated in 2012 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a degree in Journalism. Don't tell her that print is dying--she's already made the switch to public relations. As a Midwest girl, winter happens approximately 80% of the year, so she knows a thing or two about a good pair of snow boots. She lives for summer weather (even though she can never tan), Boy Meets World reruns, and an unhealthy addiction to dark chocolate and online shopping. She's a die-hard Chicago sports fan, even though she's well aware the Cubs always end up in last place every year.
