Before I made my big move from San Diego to Austin, I moved all my belongings back to my parents’ house and regrouped for 3 weeks. And while it was nice to relax, be taken care of, and fed home cooked meals, I realized that I could never permanently move back home again. Don’t get me wrong, I love visiting home and spending time with my parents, but living on your own changes you and it’s hard to revert back. Which leads me to provide you with 5 solid and legit reasons that you should avoid moving back home unless you REALLY have to.

1. The Questions.

They are never-ending. Parents just can’t help but being curious and wanting to know things when you are home. And while some questions are nosey, others are actually logical and do need to be answered. But, the fact that so many questions are being asked all the time, you almost just want to not answer any of them, ever.

2.  The Chores.

There is something different about doing chores when you decide you need to at your own apartment and when your mom tells you to do it. You know it needs to be done and you plan to, but you almost don’t want to do it just on principal. You are an adult and you do not need to be told when to pick up your room or wash your car. But of course, your parents are welcome to do it for you if they really want to…

3. The Boredom

Sleeping in, being pampered, and vegging out. All wonderful and enjoyable things, until the boredom sets in. You are used to going to work, doing things, seeing people, and just being busy. But when you move back to your hometown where none of your best friends live anymore, there is really not much to do outside of going to Costco and watching Jeopardy with your parents every night. And while I do love me some Jeopardy, I can only go without some real interaction and excitement for so long.

4.  The Time Warp

Something happens when you are back in your hometown and at the house you grew up in. You almost feel as if you have stepped into a time machine and that all the years you spent in college and growing up never happened. You go to the same places with the same people as you did back in high school. It’s nice to know that some things never change, but at the same time it’s terrifying to feel like you are going backwards in life.

5.  The Awkward Run Ins

When you grow up in a smaller town like I did, it is virtually impossible to even go to the grocery store for 5 minutes without running into someone you know. And of course, some of these people you are happy to see, but there are inevitably going to be those awkward run ins while home. You know what I’m talking about. You see those people from high school that you were never actually friends with but who you feel obligated to have the “OMG, what have you been up to” conversation. Or that cute guy you kind of dated but never talk to anymore that just happens to be in town when you are. Or an old coach that you always hated but had to put up with that tries to hug you when you unfortunately see him. Like I said, it’s AWKWARD.
