When I was 21, I started dating a guy who was 32. I had never dated someone who was that much older than me before, so I wasn’t quite sure what I was getting myself into. It was awkward at first because we thought had nothing in common. Growing up we both liked music, movies and television shows from different eras. Despite our differences, we didn’t give up on our relationship, and decided to give it a shot.

We have been dating now for 3 years, and have a strong, healthy, and happy relationship. I am beyond content with my decision to date someone who’s 10+ years older than me, and here are just a few reasons why.

1. We have less drama.

Dating someone older comes with a heck of a lot less drama. It’s an outstanding feeling when your significant other is drama free, and you both can enjoy spending time together, and not arguing over childish things.

2. He is family orientated.

Most people tend to become more involved with their family the older they get. It’s a pretty cool feeling when your significant other constantly wants you to spend time with their family even if it’s just grabbing dinner or watching a sporting event on television.

3. I’m always learning new things.

When you date someone older, most likely they are able to teach you something new. Even if it’s as simple as learning how to parallel park, it’s still pretty cool to learn something new.

4. He knows exactly what he wants.

As you mature, you start to understand what you want out of life, like getting married or having kids. Therefore your significant other is less likely to waste your time.

5. I’ve learned to appreciate how direct he can be.

It seems that the older people get, the more direct they become. People tend to speak the truth, and no longer sugar coat anything regardless of whose feelings they could end up hurting.

6. He is less selfish.

As people grow up they become less selfish. They’re more willing to give to others and give back to the community.

7. I’ve learned how to communicate with an older crowd.

When you date someone older, you have to realize that his friends will also be older. That means you will quickly learn how to communicate with people who are older, which can be a huge plus as you can learn new things from them.

8. He is financially stable.

Obviously, when you’re dating someone with more years under his belt, he is more likely financially stable. They have probably already established themselves in the workplace, and are more likely to take you out every now and then.
