It is finally getting to be summer, and I’m all about saving time getting ready or taking steps to keep my hair and makeup in place when the mercury rises. I’ve done my fair share of research in Cosmo, Seventeen, Glamour, etc, over the years. But some things just were not meant to be tried.
Blowdrying your hair in front of the AC. If you would like a sky-high electricity bill or a circuit breaker box blunder, go ahead and try this. I have tripped the breaker in several apartments, only to have to venture down to the basement and flip the switch to turn the power back on. And that ended up making me late for work. Instead I suggest sucking it up and getting sweaty while you blowdry.
Dusting powder on your sunglasses to avoid marks on your face. Nope, this does not work. Basically as soon as sunglasses hit my face, I break out in sweat. The end result is a sweaty foundation mess with rounded lines on my cheeks. SO ATTRACTIVE.
The wet nails in ice water trick. This seems like a good idea, in theory. No one likes waiting for their nails to dry. Every time I paint my own nails they smudge and smear regardless of drying method. I have tried the ice water trick once and maybe I didn’t read Pinterest correctly, but my nails were not dry after holding them in freezing water.
Using powder before foundation to lock your face in place. I will say this kind of works. Until you wash your face before bed. Then you go through a gallon of face wash to get it off. So if you have a few extra ounces of cleanser and a good half an hour to remove your makeup, go for it. If not, don’t.
Using any kind of oil product on your fried dead ends. I think I just don’t have the right hair type for this. I have thick hair in the non-traditional sense. I have thin strands, but a lot of them. I have to wash my hair every day, otherwise I will start accumulating enough grease to supply a McDonald’s with a day’s worth of cooking oil. Adding additional oil to the mix will just get messy. I will start looking like I spent a few months in the Amazon without showering. I’ll just live with split ends or I’ll get a haircut.
Any sort of updo with wet hair. My hair starts getting weird bumps in it if I don’t blowdry. So any of those chic topknots or beachy wave braids that start with a wet head do not work for me. I’ll need a bottle of LA Looks for things to stay sleek.
Self tanner of any kind. DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT try to get tan from a bottle. Or in a tanning bed for that matter. Embrace your skin tone and slather on some SPF. Pale is the new tan.
Sea salt spray or beachy waves after swimming in the ocean. I don’t think waves are possible without a curling iron or pin curls or sleeping in braids overnight. Salt water just makes my hair GROSS.
Waterproof anything. Again, if you have enough hours in a day to set aside a significant chunk of time to scrub your face, waterproof is great. Otherwise you will be wearing the same mascara for months.
