Harry Potter alum Emma Watson has been in the news quite a bit lately for her feminist activism. Today, she announced some more big news: She’s going to be playing Belle in Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast. I think we’re all just as excited as she is, no?
She wrote on her Facebook page this morning:
“I’m finally able to tell you… that I will be playing Belle in Disney’s new live-action Beauty and the Beast! It was such a big part of my growing up, it almost feels surreal that I’ll get to dance to ‘Be Our Guest’ and sing ‘Something There’. My six year old self is on the ceiling – heart bursting. Time to start some singing lessons. I can’t wait for you to see it. Emma xx”

Not only are we the generation of the golden age of Disney Princess films, we’re also the Harry Potter generation. CLEARLY this is a huge deal. Emma, so happy for you, girl. I can’t imagine a more perfect lady to play one of Disney’s most iconic, early feminist princesses.
So far, Emma is the only set cast member of the film, which is supposed to start production later this year. According to Entertainment Weekly, Bill Condon – the genius behind Dreamgirls – is set to direct the film. We’re all anxiously awaiting for the announcement of who will play The Beast, am I right?
Who are your predictions or dream-casts for the Beast and the slew of other memorable characters?
