After a looooong and never-ending winter, summer is finally here. And yes, while we want to spend every waking hour soaking up vitamin D, sometimes Mother Nature just won’t let that happen. Instead, head to the theater for a matinee screening of the newest flick–it’s usually the cheapest and easiest way to spend a rainy afternoon). Make sure to check out these 10 blockbusters this summer:
1. The Fault In Our Stars (out now)
Based on John Green’s novel of the same name, the flick features two teenagers who meet in a cancer support group. If you haven’t seen it yet, BRING KLEENEX.
2. 22 Jump Street (out now)
Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum bring their cop act to college. Need I say more?
3. Jersey Boys (June 20)
If you like movie-musicals, this one’s for you. And it’s directed by Clint Eastwood.
4. Transformers: Age of Extinction (June 27)
The latest installation of the Transformers series, starring Marky Mark. If you can stick through two and half hours of action-packed robots fighting each other, knock yourself out.
5. They Came Together (June 27)
Paul Rudd hits on Amy Poehler in this spoof of rom-coms. It’s got a chalk full of comedic geniuses, including Adam Scott, Jack McBrayer, Kenan Thompson, Michael Ian Black, Ed Helms, Ellie Kemper, Michaela Watkins (remember her from SNL?), Max Greenfield and Bill Hader, and with antics like this, I’m sure it’ll be a fun one.
6. Boyhood (July 11)
This movie films a boy as he grows from age 5 to 18–it took 12 years to make. This is the perfect indie flick of the summer (it made headlines at the Toronto and Sundance Film Festivals this year).
7. Sex Tape (July 18)
Cameron Diaz and Jason Segal reunite for another summer comedy (they starred in 2011’s Bad Teacher) for a movie about, yep, a sex tape.
8. Wish I Was Here (July 18)
Starring and directed by Zach Braff, the Kickstarter-funded movie tells the coming-of-age story of a man looking to reevaluate his life.
9. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (August 8)
Your inner comic book nerd self will thank you. Donatello, Raphael, Leonardo and Michelangelo are back in this live-action reboot, which features Megan Fox as April.
10. The Giver (August 15)
I read the book in 6th grade, and all I remember is that a young boy is chosen to be the community’s Receiver of Memories and learns about life in the “real” world. I mean, when I was 12, I was trying to navigate the awkwardness of middle school–and I’m still trying to handle the real world at 23. Also, sorry to any Swifties out there, but Taylor Swift should not be in a movie with Meryl Streep. I guess this is her first “serious” role, so we’ll have to see if she can convince the audience she’s a “serious” actress. And speaking of random, Joey Potter, er, Katie Holmes, is also in the star-studded flick.
