Designers have been getting creative with denim for quite sometime now, and this season is no exception. Trade in your bright jewel tones from fall for the more subdued colors and graphic patterns that dominated the Spring 2013 runways. Bold, printed denim is here to stay, and we’re seeing our fair share of graffiti prints, geometric patterns, and even tie-dye. While some of this may sound familiar from past seasons, Spring 2013 takes it to the next level with denim pieces that are more than just your classic pair of jeans. In addition to unique and edgy patterns, unexpected denim items such as jackets, vests, and dresses are making an appearance. Yes, they may sound like they came straight from the 80’s, but this modern take will have you thinking otherwise. And remember this very important tip – if you’re going to mix denim-on-denim, make sure that you choose different washes to avoid the Canadian Tuxedo! Here are some of my favorite ways to wear bold, edgy, and unexpected denim:
Current/Elliott The Stiletto Jean in Cosmic Tie Dye, $193, ASOS
The tie-dye print on these skinny jeans is bold and ultra-trendy, and the cosmic colors add a futuristic twist to the 70’s inspiration.
Toothpick Jean in Geometric Print, $135, J. Crew
A black and white print is always sophisticated, so why not try it on your skinny jeans! This preppy-cool pair from J. Crew would look great with a pop of color on top.
The Jean Jacket, $94, Madewell
The last time I wore a jean jacket was probably in middle school, but this version from Madewell is seriously making me rethink the decision to eliminate it from my wardrobe. Normally, a faded wash tends to be less sophisticated, but on this jacket, it has a subtle ombre effect, which adds a unique element to the jacket.
Perfect Chambray Ex-Boyfriend Shirt, $70, Madewell
Chambray shirts are literally my favorite item of clothing at the moment (seriously, I own like seven of them…)! I love a chambray shirt, because it’s not as overpowering as a jean jacket, and not as loud as a bold pair of printed jeans. Chambray shirts can be casual, but they also look great tucked into your favorite pencil skirt.
Circle-Print Chambray Popover, $88, J. Crew
Another chambray shirt, this option is more feminine and delicate, with a micro-circle print. As shown in the photo, it makes a great denim-on-denim look when paired with darker-wash jeans.
Urban Renewal Chambray and Jersey Dress, $59, Urban Outfitters
Chambray gets an edgy upgrade when mixed with jersey in this easy shirtdress. I love this dress, because it doesn’t require much styling, since it’s so unique on its own.
