If you know me, you know I have a lot of clothes. Like, my closet is pretty much about to explode. There are clothes coming out of clothes. The clothes have eyes. I’m not exaggerating.
But even though I have so much fab (and semi-awful stuff I need to get rid of), I always gravitate towards the same couple of things. This is for a number of reasons. Some clothes are comfortable. Some clothes aren’t memorable (clothes you can secretly repeat always win). And other clothes are timeless and never go out of style.
I know most of you understand. We all have those three shirts we rotate between every time we go out. We all have the shirt we pair with different cardigans and blazers for work, but secretly wear all the time. We all have the jeans we wear almost every day and rarely wash. We all have our weekend day uniform (for me that would be yoga pants and an oversized shirt).
Below you will find a list of the stuff I wear all the time straight from my closet to your computer or phone or wherever you’re reading this from. As you will see, I wear less expensive stuff more than I wear the pricier parts of my closet. I think that’s normal, though. Right? Like it’s totally okay I have a line of designer dresses I’ve only worn once collecting dust in the back of my closet y/n?
Here are my “investment pieces.” Get some.
1. Silky white and black tanks
I have multiple silky white tanks – There are two from Topshop and one from J Crew that I wear the most though. None of my faves are still available, but there are tons of similar ones out there. *Bonus: It’s also important to have solid colored silky blouses. I rotated between a black and maroon one all winter long whenever I went out. Literally rotated.
J Crew Factory has a Scalloped Cami Top for ~$27 that I might get in other colors
Regular J Crew has a classic one that’s obviously pricier – the Carrie Cami for $78
Vince Camuto has a great one for work that’s $29.97
And the classic white racerback top from J Crew Factory is only $19.50 right now (ahh!)
2. Leopard print flats
J Crew Factory has them for $69.99 right now (they are also having a crazy shoe sale and looking at it makes me want to throw up because i want to buy everything help)
3. Gold sandals
I am obsessed with gold, so I HAD to get these sandals at regular J Crew last year. I wore them ALL THE TIME. Now, they’re at the Factory, and they are on sale for only $29.50.
4. High waist skinny jeans.
I hated pants with a passion (except yoga pants of course) until I started wearing high waist skinny jeans from Madewell. My favorites are the 9″ rise dark jeans ($128) and the 9″ black jeans ($128) that are ripped at the knee ($128). These jeans will change your life. Pants haters will start covering their legs. It will be weird.
5. Cotton V-Neck T-Shirts
Once again, Madewell saves the day. I loooove my t-shirts from Madewell. I have a couple, and I wear the solid colored white one, as well as the lighter colored striped ones the most. I have this weird thing where I don’t really like how I look in high neck t-shirts (not tanks, just t-shirts), so they have to be V. Or at least not too high around the neck. Here are my two faves:
‘Whisper’ Cotton V-Neck Pocket T – $19.50
6. Yoga pants
^^Adventure me. This is basically my life uniform for any time I am not at work. Not sure why I’m standing like that. Back to the yoga pants…
I live in my Lululemon yoga pants. Black ones are the staple of course, but once you get a couple you can branch out to colors and patterns. They last longer. They make me feel better about myself. They’re comfortable. Couch approved.
Lululemon Wunder Under Crop (Hi-Rise) – $88
7. Oversized long sleeve shirt
I take Pure Barre and they were selling this Emi Jay shirt and I bought it. It’s literally so comfortable. Here it is in plain black for $58. #MustHave
8. Comfort cardigans.
Like most women, I am always freezing at work. That’s why it’s so important to me to have a closet stocked full of fashion cardigans to wear over t-shirts and tanks (I work in a casual environment, so although I like fashion blazers, it looks like I’m dressing up too much when I wear them, which is FINE – but not every day). During warmer months, I use the cardigan as a jacket or I just don’t wear it outside. I live around the corner from a boutique where I found an awesome fringe cardigan from Olive + Oak ($78). It’s also essential to have a basic black and white cardigan. I had a Splendid one that I literally bought 9 years ago and still wear today.
9. Denim jacket.
This jacket is essentialllllll to establishing a cool daytime vibe for your outfit (you can easily upgrade that vibe to nighttime with a leather jacket). I have this jacket from J Crew Factory ($42.50), but if you want a lighter wash one, Madewell has one for $118.
10. Jack Rodgers Black Booties
I wore these booties pretty much every day from fall to now. They are so easy to wear, they’re different than other sandals, and they’re on sale right now for only $88.77. Now is a great time to buy boots because they cheap. You can wear these booties with dresses and shorts too so it’s not like you’ll put them away until next winter.
