If you’re in your 20s, you’re probably just starting to figure out how to do life: how to pay bills, make actual meals and balance everything in your life. And to top it all off, you might be noticing some changes happening on your face. Things like wrinkles might start to make their entrances and dark circles appear under your eyes as an added present that comes with adulthood.
To beat these aging signs and keep your skin looking healthy and young, there are some things you can do starting now. Follow these tips to keep your face looking young, even when you start feeling old.
1. Sunscreen is a must, literally all the time
Sun is one of the biggest contributors to aging skin. Going out and tanning might give you a pretty glow for the summer, but in a few years you’ll have wrinkles that you can thank your sun-kissed years for.
Apply sunscreen every single day, even if you’re going to be inside. UV rays can sneak their way through windows and into cars and office buildings. You should be using at least SPF 30 on your face and skin a few times a day, and try to avoid sun exposure as much as possible.
2. Be timid with Retinol
Retinol is one of the leading products used to fight aging. However, you should be really careful about how you use it. Using too much too soon can lead to skin irritation and blotchiness. To avoid this, introduce it gradually to your skin, working up to using it once a day. It works best at night. Try using a moisturizer on top of the retinol right before bed, after cleaning your face.
3. Choose one or two products and stick with them
Everywhere you turn, it seems like there’s a new anti-aging product on the market. However, you don’t need to spend all of your money on these new and expensive products. Choosing one or two products that offer what you want and need for your skin and using them consistently will be better for you than trying a new cream every week.
If you use too many products on your skin, your skin might react by drying out or getting irritated, which will have the opposite effect that you want.
4. Serum vs. cream … know the difference
For dry skin that needs hydration, an anti-aging cream is the way to go. Serums have mostly the same ingredients, but they are highly concentrated and penetrate into the skin without really hydrating at all. If you don’t know which one is best for your skin, ask a dermatologist. Or try both and see which one works, then stick with that one!
5. Try non-invasive treatments
Botox isn’t your only answer. There are plenty of safe and non-invasive treatments that are meant to lift your skin and keep wrinkles and fine lines away. With these new advancements in the medical industry, you have plenty of options for getting the skin you want without having to puncture any skin.
6. Water is your best friend
Drinking lots of water will help your face and skin stay hydrated, which will fight aging effects. Keeping your body hydrated is really one of the best things you can do for your skin in terms of anti-aging and overall health.
But beware! If you’re constantly drinking from a straw or sucking a drink out of a bottle, your face is actually facing a lot of stress. Pursing your lips constantly to drink creates wrinkles and lines around the mouth. Try sipping from a glass instead, or getting a water bottle with a squirt top.
7. Be nice to your face
As a general rule, take care of your face and your skin. Take your make-up off before bed, no matter how tired you are. If you exercise outside, do it during the early morning or late afternoon to protect your skin from sun exposure. Also, while you’re exercising, keep your face relaxed to keep pressure off the skin. Don’t smoke. Not only will that be beneficial for your health, but smoking is a leading cause of aging skin. Taking care of your body and skin in general will help your skin stay fresh and healthy looking.
8. Don’t be afraid to start early
It’s easy to think that you’re only in your 20s, so why worry about aging skin now? However, the earlier you start taking care of your skin, the better. It’s never too early to start applying these anti-aging tips to give yourself the best chance of a wrinkle-free face in thirty or so years.
