The CMA awards were last night and if you’re a country music fan, you watched them. Country stars like Jason Aldean, Brett Eldrege (ah, swoon), and Rascal Flatts were all there and we all love to watch them.
Just as every other year, Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley hosted the show and opened with a series of jokes about pop culture. Unfortunately, their jokes took a quick downfall when joking about divorce led Brad to look over at Blake Shelton. At first Blake was able to chuckle, but then they dragged in the Ashley Madison case – implying rumors that he cheated on Miranda Lambert. Cameras stayed off of his face, and I’m sure his face looked about as pissed as mine.
It will forever be too soon to joke about this heartbreaking divorce, Brad and Carrie, duh. Miranda won Female Vocalist of the year and she gave a heart breaking acceptance speech saying, “I appreciate it, I needed a bright spot this year.” Crush. My. Heart. However, both Blake and Miranda performed and did great!
The CMA Awards show gave recognition to the new generation of girl power in country! Maddie & Tae along with Kelsea Ballerini got special shout-outs, and they got to perform their #1 hits, Girl in a Country Song and Love Me Like You Mean It.
Little Big Town had a great night at the CMA Awards. If you aren’t familiar with their hit, Girl Crush, there is much controversy with the song. When it was first released, many country music fans (who clearly didn’t listen to the lyrics) refused to support the song and called radio stations telling them they would boycott if they continued to play the song. Although the song is about wanting to be an ex’s new girl, lyrics like “I wanna taste her lips [yeah cause they taste like you],” made some fans think the song was about a homosexual relationship and therefore didn’t like it. This caused the country music community to support gay marriage as well as Little Big Town in a huge way. Little Big Town won several awards last night and killed their performance of Girl Crush. How’s that for a middle finger, haters!?
Unfortunately, that meant poor Sam Hunt got jipped of many well-deserved awards. Even if you don’t know country, you know Sam Hunt. You love Sam Hunt. Sam Hunt got my brother into country music – which is impossible.
And who is Chris Stapleton? I have no clue. This newcomer took home a good handful of awards including Male Vocalist of the Year. All I know is that he performed with Justin Timberlake at the show. I want to say it was an incredible performance but honestly I was only paying attention to JT who KILLED. He can sing, act, dance, do comedy, and now the boy can do country? JUST-IN. I just can’t. Justin, you slay me. Praise Jesus Hallelujah! I’m not sure who was freaking out more, me or Keith Urban.
My husband Thomas Rhett, who looked amazing as always, took me back to high school and did a performance with Fall Out Boy singing his hit, Crash and Burn, and their song, Uma Thurman. It was pretty interesting to see one of country’s newest stars performing alongside Pete Wentz, who I used to cut out of J-14 and put on my binder.
After three hours of wondering where Reba McEntire was, the queen herself finally came out and gave a killer performance with Brooks and Dunn. After singing, she presented the biggest award of the CMAs: Entertainer of the Year.
And who won? None other than Luke Bryan! Shake it for me, boy!
